Karis Pearson/PA MediaLondon Mayor Sadiq Khan, a critic of U.S. President Donald Trump, got a lifetime appointment to the UK House of Lords.Khan was one of 26 new appointees to the prestigious British chamber under outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.A spokesperson for the mayor told The Epoch Times that Khan “is honored to be given a peerage.”“London gave Sadiq the opportunities to go from a council estate to being Mayor of London, and his focus will continue to be ensuring that all Londoners get the same shot at reaching their full potential that London gave him and his family,” the spokesperson said.“Serving as Mayor of the greatest city in the world continues to be the privilege of Sadiq’s life. He is excited about what more can be delivered in the years ahead and he will devote his time and energy to standing up for our city and building a fairer, safer and greener London for everyone.”Khan and Trump have a history of contentious exchanges of words.King Charles III must approve of the nominees from the leaders of the political parties. The monarch usually accepts nominations to the House of Lords.Of the 26 appointees, 16 come from the Labour Party, five from the Liberal Democrats, three from the Conservative Party, and two from crossbench peerages.Along with Khan, the Labour appointees include Child Poverty Action Group Chief Executive Alison Garnham; Alison Lowe, deputy mayor for policing and crime in West Yorkshire; Barbara Mills, chair of the Bar Council of England and Wales, family law barrister and Joint Head of Chambers at 4PB; Cathy Ashley, chief executive of Family Rights Group and former chair of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust; former General Secretary of UNISON Christina McAnea, broadcaster June Sarpong; and former presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament Ken Macintosh.The Labour appointees also include British economist and former Parliament member Kitty Ussher; Marcus Davey, former CEO and artistic director of the Roundhouse theater; National Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses Martin McTague; Nick Stace, chief global impact officer at Howden Group; human rights expert Parvais Jabbar; Roberto Neri, CEO of The Ivors Academy and a director of UK Music; human rights expert Saul Lehrfreund; and Tim J. Smith, former chief executive of the Food Standards Agency.The Conservative nominees include entrepreneur and philanthropist David Ross, former British Army Gen. Patrick Sanders, and psychiatry professor Swaran Singh.
