Ford Criticizes Carneys Deal Slashing Chinese EV Tariffs, Citing Threats to Ontario Jobs

AP Photo/Caroline ChenOntario Premier Doug Ford says Prime Minister Mark Carney’s deal with Beijing to allow Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) into Canada is a “mess” that will harm Ontario’s automakers.Speaking in Beijing on Jan. 16, Carney announced that Canada will reduce tariffs on up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles per year from 100 percent to 6.1 percent. In return, Ottawa expects Chinese automakers to invest in Canada and for Beijing to eliminate its existing 100 percent tariffs on agricultural products and 25 percent tariffs on various seafood items by March 1.
