Trump Commends Giant Eagles Summer Price Cuts on Over 300 Products

President Donald Trump on Sunday praised grocery chain Giant Eagle for lowering prices on more than 300 products through Labor Day, saying the move would help ease the burden on American families.“Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families,” Trump said in a Truth Social post, urging other supermarkets to follow Giant Eagle’s steps.“We will continue to bring Prices DOWN, just like Oil, Gas, Eggs, and Prescription Drugs, all of which are dropping FAST after the disaster we inherited from Sleepy Joe Biden.”Giant Eagle launched the seasonal pricing initiative on July 9 to lower prices on “most frequently purchased products”—including ground beef, seedless grapes, and cheese—across its supermarkets through Sept. 9.Justin Weinstein, executive vice president and chief merchandising and marketing officer at Giant Eagle, said the summer price cuts built on the company’s seasonal pricing initiative last fall.“We know our customers are seeking value in the face of elevated expenses,” Weinstein said in a July 9 statement.“We took learnings from our seasonal pricing efforts last fall and used those insights to deliver a strong savings program that can help customers save all summer long.”Walmart and Sam’s Club also announced on July 6 nationwide price cuts on various grocery items. The discounted items at Walmart include ground beef, sweet corn on the cob, fresh cherries, chips, soda, disposable paper plates, and ice cream.Sam’s Club said it would lower prices on more than 250 items, including road trip snacks, grilling essentials, and summer entertaining favorites. These products include Member’s Mark bone-in chicken wings, Member’s Mark beef hot dogs, Member’s Mark ground beef, and Member’s Mark whole bone-in pork back ribs.Trump praised the move on July 6, calling the price cuts a “huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart, which is a truly patriotic Company who loves the U.S.A.”Meanwhile, Kroger announced earlier this month an agreement to acquire Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion. The transaction includes $1.25 billion in cash and the assumption of about $400 million in outstanding liabilities, the companies stated.Giant Eagle, a family-owned business founded in 1931, operates 197 supermarkets and 11 standalone pharmacies across western Pennsylvania, northern Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana. The company generates about $9 billion in annual sales, according to Kroger.The companies expect the deal to close in 2027, subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. Kroger said the acquisition is expected to add to adjusted earnings in the second full year after completion.Bill Pan contributed to this report.
