Eddie Bauer Files for Bankruptcy Protection, May Shutter US, Canada Stores

Brandon Bell/Getty ImagesOutdoor apparel company Eddie Bauer on Feb. 9 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, in its third bankruptcy filing since 2003, and announced plans to wind down operations at its approximately 180 retail locations in the United States and Canada.The company, founded in downtown Seattle in 1920 by its namesake, renowned outdoorsman Eddie Bauer, said it will begin liquidating merchandise at its retail stores while simultaneously pursuing the sale of all or part of its retail business. Stores will remain open as the company moves through court-supervised sale proceedings, and the company noted that it may halt the full closure of retail operations if a buyer steps forward.
