The Chinese military’s chief anti-corruption enforcer has risen to become the country’s second-most senior uniformed officer, filling a vacancy created by the disappearance and removal of a top general, who was seen as a close ally of the Party’s top leader, Xi Jinping.

Gen. Zhang Shengmin, a veteran political commissar, has been officially promoted to the second-ranked vice chairman of the Central Military Committee (CMC), the Party agency that controls the armed forces.
