Apple to Begin Mac Mini Production in US

Date:

Apple will begin manufacturing Mac minis from its Houston facility this year, the company announced on Thursday. The tech company had announced plans to begin Mac mini desktop production in Houston back in February. In an April 13 statement announcing the opening of an Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC) in the Houston facility, the company confirmed that Mac mini production will roll out sometime this year. This will be the first time the device is being manufactured in the United States. The decision to manufacture in the United States comes as the company faces constraints in meeting demand for its Mac line of products, Apple CEO Tim Cook said during a July 30 earnings call. Mac and iPhone products are doing “remarkably better than we thought they would do,” according to Cook.“The supply chain just has less flexibility in it than normal. We’ve been pulling supply ahead. At some point, there’s a limit to that. We’ve got a quarter that we’re going to be scrambling on the supply side,” Cook said.In its latest statement, Apple said that the Houston facility currently builds and ships the company’s advanced AI servers. In February last year, Apple announced plans to invest more than $500 billion in the United States over a four-year period. Months later, in August 2025, Apple increased the investment to $600 billion, with the extra $100 billion allocated to multiple projects, including construction of a 250,000-square-foot server manufacturing plant in Houston.Apple shipped its first advanced AI servers in less than a year of identifying a factory site in Houston, the company’s recent statement said. Since announcing the $600 billion investment, Apple and its partners have invested in manufacturing advanced components, cover glass, and custom silicon.“In less than nine months, we have invested hundreds of millions of dollars into this Houston facility. We stood up a factory, started production, and shipped the first advanced AI servers off the line,” Cook said in the statement.“We believe in American workers and American ingenuity, and we are moving at an incredible pace because we want to build more than great products. We want to build the future of American manufacturing.”Meanwhile, the newly opened AMC, housed in the Houston facility, will offer free training and education to small- and medium-sized businesses. The company will share its knowledge with participants to help speed up smart manufacturing across the United States. AMC is also expected to provide training to local college students. In an Aug. 14 post on X, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said that Apple was delivering on its promise to bring advanced manufacturing back to the United States.“$600 billion invested in America. Mac mini made in Texas. American workers building the future,” Lutnick said. The Houston facility is one of the many investments Apple is making in America. In June, President Donald Trump announced that Apple will partner with Intel to design and manufacture computer chips in the country.Apple has mostly relied on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to manufacture processors that power its various products, including Macs and iPhones. The partnership with Intel will allow the company to diversify sourcing options as it navigates tariffs, manufacturing reshoring, and a complex supply chain network. In July last year, Apple and MP Materials announced a $500 million agreement to expand the nation’s sole rare-earth processing plant. This is projected to support the production of recycled magnets that will power Apple devices.
