How Major US Stock Indexes Fared Aug. 24

U.S. stocks drifted to a mixed finish as the countdown ticks toward potentially market-moving events coming later in the week.The S&P 500 slipped 0.3 percent Monday and pulled further from its record set earlier this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.3 percent, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.8 percent.Yields eased in the bond market after oil prices dropped. Investors are waiting for Nvidia’s profit report coming Wednesday, which could shed light on how strong the AI boom remains. On Friday, Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh will give a speech as pressure rises on him to hike interest rates to get inflation under control.On Monday:The S&P 500 fell 21.51 points, or 0.3 percent, to 7,652.86.The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 140.15 points, or 0.3 percent, to 53,417.16.The Nasdaq composite fell 200.26 points, or 0.8 percent, to 25,980.19.The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 22.79 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,995.08.For the year:The S&P 500 is up 807.36 points, or 11.8 percent.The Dow is up 5,353.87 points, or 11.1 percent.The Nasdaq is up 2,738.20 points, or 11.8 percent.The Russell 2000 is up 513.17 points, or 20.7 percent.The views and opinions expressed are those of the authors.
