Mega Dinghy Carrying Record 230 Migrants Reaches UK

Britain’s Home Office has confirmed that 230 migrants crossed the Channel from France to England on one boat on Monday—a “mega dinghy”—in the largest ever number of illegal immigrant arrivals on a single vessel.This breaks the previous record set on July 23, when 165 people made the crossing on a single vessel.Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who last week pledged that his party would deploy the Navy to return migrants crossing illegally back to France before they could land in Britain, said the number of people arriving amounted to an “invasion.”With the good weather over the weekend, 423 migrants arrived on Sunday, while 258 reached English shores on Saturday.UK media reported the mega dinghy arrived in Dover in the early hours of Monday morning.Photographs taken off the coast of northern France showed the boat was so full that many of the migrants had to dangle their legs in the water as it entered the world’s busiest shipping route. The boat continued its journey with 230 people aboard, including more than 20 children, which the French authority described as a “new and sad record.”Media commentators and headlines noted that the “small boat crisis” was now turning into a “big boat crisis,” with The Sun newspaper calculating that the cost to Britain to accommodate and process 230 migrants who claim asylum could be in the region of 25 million pounds, based on an estimate of 106,000 pounds per person. All were rescued by the French and British services.There has been widespread anger in the UK, including violent protests, about the impact of mass migration on the social fabric of the country, as well as the cost of accommodating illegal immigrants in hotels and in other facilities, such as military bases. Previously, migrants were often smuggled through the Channel Tunnel in the backs of trucks.Organized crime aided by technological innovations such as encryption is thought to have led to the growth of people smuggling gangs. The International Center for Migration Policy Development says encrypted communications are widely used in organized migrant smuggling and that technological developments have enabled new modus operandi.The average number of migrants per boat entering the UK was about seven in 2018. By the year ending March 2026, this had risen to 63 per vessel.Labour was elected in July 2024 on Starmer’s pledge to “smash the gangs” following the Conservatives’ failure to “stop the boats.” Now in opposition, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has said that the UK must leave the European Court of Human Rights, which it has remained in since Brexit, in order to be able to prevent illegal immigrants from claiming asylum and speed up deportations. Reform has also pledged to pull Britain out of the Court.
