France Announces New Voluntary Youth Military Service Scheme

Thibault Camus/APFrench President Emmanuel Macron announced a new voluntary youth military service scheme to help France respond to “accelerating threats” around the world on Nov. 27.The program, which is slated to begin next year, will be open to 18- and 19-year-olds of both sexes, who will be paid for their service, which will last 10 months, during which time they will receive training in weapons handling, marching, and field drills.
